Reflection on Kids Camp

With ketchup-stained polos, dirt under their nails from bug hunting at the park, and still wet hair from waterslide races- their joy is evident. As another successful day at camp comes to a close, parents enter the recreation building to a swarm of excited chatter as campers spill details of their day.

After eleven weeks of adventure, Camp Pine Canyon remains a retreat, a home to create unforgettable moments for our Junior Members. Where neighbors quickly turn into friends and Friday night camp suddenly become every camper’s favorite activity of the week.

Camp Counselors have the special opportunity to show Campers what a true Flagstaff summer is all about. Head of Camp and Recreation, Lauren Pavlina, supports counselors in creating curated experiences, encouraging campers to think outside the box and make new friends.

Of course, a summer at Pine Canyon wouldn’t be complete without some traditional camp activities. Campers partook in Slip n Slide races, tie-dye parties, and seemingly neverending games of dodgeball. Some even earned a trophy at the Annual Fishing Derby, after learning how to fish just weeks before.

But the fun doesn’t stop there.

Outside of day-to-day camp programming, our Director of Recreation, Kendall Gonzalez, organized events to ensure every kiddo had an opportunity to create camp memories. Some of her favorites included creating a battlefield at Trout Creek Park for their first-ever Nerf Gun Wars and watching the kids bring their tiniest friends to the American Girl Tea Party for an evening of elegance.

A summer at Camp Pine Canyon is a summer full of forming friendships and foraging for pinecones.
