Golf Rules Refresher
The 2018 golf season has officially arrived. We opened the course to play late last month, and Mother Nature is cooperating, so far.
The new season brings with it quite a few changes at Pine Canyon, including course upgrades, the introduction of golf boards and the debut of a caddie program. It also marks the first season for Jason Sanders, Pine Canyon’s director of golf.
Jason has been preparing for the spring season since joining the Pine Canyon team in December, and part of that preparation included attending a three-day workshop that focused on USGA rules. Jason and his assistant, Brandon Miller, came away with a wealth of knowledge about impending changes to the rulebook. While the 36 or so rule changes won’t take effect until January of 2019, it’s always good to know what’s coming. Because, the rules of golf can be confusing, to golfers of every skill level. It’s difficult for most PGA professionals, even, to understand every rule and every application of that rule, Jason said.
If ever in doubt, the USGA’s website is a treasure trove for referencing rules for certain scenarios. The site features videos and quizzes about common circumstances on the course, and it also has a page dedicated to the rule book’s major revisions, from equipment to balls at rest, balls in motion, taking relief and beyond. A better understanding of the rules has its perks, Jason said. It not only gives you a better appreciation for the game, but it also gives you an edge over your opponent. With that in mind, feel free to quiz Jason or Brandon next time you see them at the Pro Shop.
