Golf Fitness: Five Golf-Specific Stretches to get Ready for The Season
Well, it’s been an interesting start to the spring and summer season here in Flagstaff. An early May snowfall caught a few of us off guard — though maybe we should’ve seen it coming after those strangely warm 60-degree days back in November and December. Nature always evens things out.
But just like that, the sun is back, the temps are climbing into the 70s, and school is about to let out. That means it’s officially time to wring out those golf muscles and get back into the rhythm of the season.
The first few swings of the year tend to remind us that the body doesn’t always bounce right back. A little stiffness here, a tight shoulder there — it’s normal. That’s why a proper stretch, like wringing out a damp towel, can help refresh your joints and prep your body for what lies ahead.
Here are five simple golf-specific stretches that can help you ease back in and feel better on — and off — the course.
1. Spinal Twists
Sit on the floor with your legs extended. Cross one leg over the other, then rotate your torso toward the bent knee. This builds rotational strength and flexibility — essential for a smooth, powerful swing.
2. Hip Flexor Stretch
From a kneeling position, plant one foot forward and gently press your hips forward. This stretch helps loosen up tight hips and improve lower-body mobility — key for generating power from the ground up.
3. Cross-Body Shoulder Stretch
Extend one arm across your chest and gently pull it closer with your opposite hand. This supports shoulder mobility, which helps keep your backswing and follow-through fluid and comfortable.
4. Hamstring Stretch
Rest one leg on a low surface, keeping your back straight, then slowly lean forward. Flexible hamstrings support a stable stance and reduce the chance of strain throughout your swing.
5. Wrist & Forearm Stretch
Hold one arm out, palm up, and gently pull back on your fingers with the other hand. This relieves tension and builds the grip strength needed for control and consistency.
