Agronomy Team Creates Exceptional Golf Experience at Pine Canyon
Thanks to Flagstaff’s four seasons, snowfall and colder temperatures inspire a designated offseason for anyone looking to play Pine Canyon’s golf course. But, for those who care for it, there is no offseason.
Our talented and dedicated agronomy and maintenance teams work year-round to keep the course in pristine condition and give it the best chance at emerging from the winter months in the best shape possible. And this year, they did it on an expedited timeline as the course allowed for play in early April in response to the COVID-19 pandemic.
Much of the work, though imperative to offer the premium golf experience we do at Pine Canyon, is done quietly, without much fanfare. As members enjoy the beauty of winter snowfall, our teams are preparing to remove any accumulation from greens, allowing the grass to breathe in preparation for the golf season ahead.
That effort has agronomy director Andy Huber looking forward to the “best greens in many years” at Pine Canyon, as teams can now focus on priming the surfaces to become truer, smoother, and faster each week.
A tree-thinning effort near the green on hole 3, aided by a Sun Seeker app, will allow for that area to get much-needed, additional sunlight. It’s not the first time the agronomy team has thinned vegetation to allow more light to reach a green, and they’re looking forward to immediate results.
Beyond green maintenance and care that improves the playability, our teams rely on times when the course is quiet to complete projects that improve the overall experience at Pine Canyon. One of those projects involved removing all of the no-longer-needed fencings that shielded trees from the area’s elk near the course. Teams left fencing on smaller trees and hope to remove additional fencing throughout the community in the coming months.
And, to improve the quality of Trout Park trail, crews added new gravel to the cart trail and gave the pathway more defined edging, making it easier and more enjoyable to walk dogs, hike or drive golf carts.
All of the work speaks to our dedication at Pine Canyon to offer the best experience for our members and owners, from top to bottom, every time. Even in the offseason.
